Die empirische Bildungsforschung weist schon seit Jahrzehnten regelmäßig auf benachteiligte Personengruppen im deutschen Bildungssystem hin. Dabei hat sich der „Prototyp“ des benachteiligten Kindes bzw. Jugendlichen jedoch stark verändert. Im Rahmen des Seminars werden aktuelle Befunde zur Bildungsbenachteiligung im Deutschen Schulsystem gesichtet und ein Blick auf Bildungseinrichtungen gerichtet, deren Schüler/-innenschaft insgesamt als benachteiligt gelten können. Da Bildungsbenachteiligung ein internationales Entwicklungsphänomen ist, wird auch ein „Blick über den Zaun“ geworfen. Als Beispiel hierfür gilt der Bildungsraum Toronto/Kanada, da hier schon vor Jahren die Entkopplung von Herkunft und Bildungserfolg als bedeutender Entwicklungsauftrag erkannt wurde. Die Region gilt daher als Best-Practice-Beispiel für einen erfolgreichen Umgang mit Bildungsbenachteiligung im Schulsystem.
