Das Grundseminar soll in Grundfragen und Arbeitsmethoden der Wirtschafts und Sozialgeschichte Lateinamerikas im 20. Jahrhundert einführen. Im ersten Teil des Seminars soll die historische Dimension des Begriffs der Globalisierung diskutiert werden. Im Anschluß daran soll in neuere, sozialwissenschaftliche Theorien zur Globalisierung eingeführt werden. Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung wird jedoch anhand von empirischen Fallbeispielen aus Lateinamerika die unterschiedliche Entwicklung von Regionen im Globalisierungskontext untersucht werden. Dabei sollen sowohl positive wie negative Globalisierungserfahrungen und Perzeptionen aufgrund von Neoliberalismus, ökonomischer Liberalisierung, Deregulierung als auch die Frage nach dem politischen "cui bono" der Globalisierungsergebnisse hinsichtlich der Position der Region, Subregion oder des Staates und einzelner Sektoren und Bevölkerungsgruppen thematisiert werden. Auch die Entwicklung und Relevanz von "integrierten Märkten" wie Mercosur und NAFTA soll diskutiert werden.
