239838 Under our Skin: African Heritage in the Caribbean (S) (SoSe 2014)

Contents, comment

The Caribbean is a region that stands out through its cultural complexity, historically located at the crossroads of African, European and Native American heritage. A space of entanglements, the Caribbean at the same time disseminates its influence back to the world in various fields, such as literature, music and arts. This seminar will take a close look at those areas, particularly at the ways in which they reflect and renegotiate an African heritage which has had a major impact in the Caribbean. I advise students to take this seminar together with “English in the Caribbean” offered by Joseph Farquharson, since the two classes complement each other thematically. In order to obtain a Studienleistung or a grade, students will need to do an oral presentation and several writing assignments.
