260086 Kripke's "Naming and Necessity" (S) (WiSe 2023/2024)

Contents, comment

In this seminar, we will read Kripke’s ground-breaking philosophical work, Naming and Necessity (1980), which is based on the transcripts of three lectures he delivered at Princeton in 1970. These lectures played a pivotal role in reshaping the landscape of analytic philosophy; this makes Naming and Necessity essential reading for any aspiring philosopher. We will discuss Kripke’s views on exciting topics at the interface of the philosophy of language and metaphysics, including the semantics of proper names and natural kind terms, the metaphysical concepts of necessity and possibility, the epistemological concepts of a priori and a posteriori knowledge, and the notion of identity.
