This seminar investigates the integration of immigrants and other minority groups at the labor market. We ask how the lower income, lower status and longer unemployment periods of immigrants in comparison to the native population can be explained. Human Capital Theory and Relational Inequality Approach are discussed as the two main theoretical frameworks. We see the reasons for immigrants’ disadvantages at the labor market not only in lack of human capital or lower labor market experience but also trace them back to characteristics of work organizations immigrants are employed in. The empirical studies in this seminar focus mainly on the situation in Germany and USA.
