Soziale Bewegungen haben in Lateinamerika eine lange Tradition. Derzeit spielen sie in einigen Staaten eine große Rolle bei der Gestaltung der nationalen Politik während in anderen Ländern ihre Einflussmöglichkeiten sehr begrenzt sind. So stellen die brasilianische Landlosenbewegung, die mexikanischen zapatistas und die argentinischen piqueteros eine feste Größe im politischen Leben der Länder dar und sind auch über die Ländergrenzen hinaus bekannt. In Bolivien haben sie nach dem Verständnis des Präsidenten Evo Morales mit seinem Amtsantritt 2006 gar die Regierungsgeschäfte übernommen. Dagegen scheinen die Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten sozialer Bewegungen z.B. in Guatemala eher beschränkt zu sein.
Ziel des Seminars ist es, die Teilnehmenden in die Theorien der Bewegungsforschung einzuführen und anhand von Fallstudien den Gründen für Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten neuerer sozialer Bewegungen und ihrer Bedeutung in verschiedenen Ländern Lateinamerikas nachzugehen.
