Migrationsprozesse sind vielschichtig, heterogen und komplex. Ihre Erforschung beinhaltet das Erklären und Beschreiben von Strukturen, Politiken, Prozessen und Identitäten. Im Zentrum qualitativer Migrationsforschung steht deshalb nicht nur Frage wie solche Prozesse ablaufen, sondern auch welche Strukturen und Politiken diese begünstigen oder behindern und inwiefern damit verbundene Erfahrungen prägend für den Lebenslauf der MigrantInnen sind. Wissenschaftler vieler Diziplinen haben eine Vielzahl von qualitativen Methoden und Methodologien angewandt, um diese komplexen Themen zu erforschen. Ziel des Seminares ist es, den Studenten die wichtigsten Methodologien und Methoden vorzustellen ,die in der qualitativen Migrationsforschung Anwendung finden. Im ersten Teil des Seminares wird die historische Entwicklung der qualitativen Migrationsforschung behandelt. Darauf aufbauend werden verschiedene Studien der qualitativen Migrationsforschung vorgestellt. In praktischen Übungen soll den Studenten die Möglichkeit gegeben werden, sich mit Forschungsmethoden sowie Werkzeuge der Datenanalyse, die speziell in der Migrationsforschung von Bedeutung sind, vertraut zu machen.
