Bildung ist einer jener Begriffe, die auf den ersten Blick Konsens erzeugen - schließlich ist jeder für mehr und/oder bessere Bildung -, bei genauerer Betrachtung allerdings zeigt sich, dass eben nicht klar ist, was unter Bildung verstanden wird oder wie sie angebahnt werden soll. Dieser Kurs setzt es sich zum Ziel den vielschichtigen Begriff, der Bildung nunmal ist, genauer unter die Lupe zu nehmen und dessen Entwicklungen historisch zurückzuverfolgen. Im Rahmen dieses Unterfangens werden nicht nur historische Varianten und Verständnisse von Bildung diskutiert, ebenso werden 'größere' Perspektiven aufgerufen, z.B. wie steht Bildung im Verhältnis zum 'guten Leben', Glück oder Eudämonie. Darüber hinaus werden globale Bildungstrends (ca. seit den 1960ern) und deren Impact auf das deutsche Bildungssystem erarbeitet, bspw. die PISA Studie und wie diese mit einem historisch-orientiertem Bildungsbegriff konfligiert.
