392259 Communications privacy and surveillance (S) (WiSe 2013/2014)

Recent revelations by the Guardian, New York Times and ProPublica have shown that many communications by telephone or over the internet which need to be private are in fact surveyable by the US National Security Agency and UK GCHQ. Arguably, critical communications such as between lawyers and their clients and experts and between two parties engaging in commercial transaction using a credit card need to be irrevocably private. This is no longer guaranteed with current protocols. This seminar will discuss the issues arising and possible solutions.
