Global approaches have become one of the currently predominant standards in historical research. Analytical multiperspectivity, authorial self-reflexivity, and—first and foremost—the postcolonial critique and the overcoming of Eurocentric and western universalisms currently belong to the indispensable prerequisites of cutting-edge historiography. But what role does Europe play in a global historical perspective? And how do scholars translate and apply global stances and conceptuality to European history?
This seminar tackles these questions and engages with the state-of-the-art of global approaches to European history beyond eurocentrism. After a preliminary introduction to pivotal contributions to postcolonial and global approaches, we will shift our scope towards the current debate on writing innovative European histories from a global perspective. Finally, a specific focus will be dedicated to the discussion of recent monographs in this field of research.
