230326 Shakespeare, mainly Measure for Measure (S) (WiSe 2023/2024)

Contents, comment

The aim of this course is to give you the opportunity to apply the analytical tools to which you were introduced in Basis2.1 "Introduction to Literary Analysis" and to analyse and interpret literary texts in the genres of drama (I have chosen Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night) and verse (= narrative poetry; I have chosen Beowulf); and lyrical poetry (I have chosen sonnets).
As you see, our primary material will be mainly early modern (= Elizabethan/Jacobean literature). If you have a decided aversion to Shakespeare, please choose another AILT course.

Requirements for participation, required level

You should already have completed the lecture course Basis2.1 "Introduction to Literary Analysis". I will assume that you have been reading an introductory textbook, either Nünning & Nünning or Michael Meyer, and have digested the terminology.

Bibliography

The extract from Beowulf and the sonnets will be provided.
Please buy a paperback edition of Twelfth Night, either from the New Cambridge series (editor: Elizabeth Story Donno), or from the Arden series (editor: Keir Elam, or Gretchen E. Minton, or the Oxford series (editors: Roger Warren and Stanley Wells). -- Please note that school editions, Klett parallel German/English editions, or random internet versions are NOT acceptable for scholarly work.
