This class will provide an overview of multilingualism in continental North American, i.e. USA, Mexico and Canada. Each of these societies has experienced multilingualism in dramatically different ways. In the USA, second languages came with recent immigrants, in Mexico, the dominant language came with the conquerors, and Canada presents the struggle between two high prestige languages. We will explore the political issues that led to the different realities, and touch upon how recent findings in the science of multilingualism are helping to reshape the debate in the entire continent.
