One of the features of our times is the erosion of the positivist optimism regarding the objective truth of the world as we see it. Phenomenological and poststructuralist philosophers have long insisted on the practical or discursive constructedness of reality. However, circumstances such as the rise of online communities committed to "alternative facts," the novel availability of "artificial intelligence" that generates convincing, factual accounts through mathematical sleight of hand, and an increasing awareness of the extent to which powerful actors are able to impress their agendas on the churn of information add to the perception that the truth is precarious. At the same time, we all know what we hold to be true most of the time, and we are willing to defend our ground if someone challenges our facts.
In this course, we will approach the question how people come to believe in the truths that they recognize from the perspective of social/cultural anthropology. We will ask what practices and relations go into establishing truths in indigenous epistemologies, science, religious communities, law, politics, and everyday interaction. And we will explore what we can learn about the differences between the true, the fake, and the truths that people embrace even though they are well aware of the conditions of their production.
The anthropological perspective entails that we will approach these issues through ethnographic literature and the experiences of people around the world, rather than through philosophical texts.
