Harmonische Analyse bedeutet in der Physik die Zerlegung von Funktionen in harmonische Schwingungen. Dies lässt sich mathematisch als Fouriertransformation von Funktionen auf kommutativen Gruppen verstehen. In der Vorlesung geht es um die Verallgemeinerung auf nichtkommutative Gruppen und homogene Räume, wobei Gruppendarstellungen und ihre Charaktere an die Stelle der harmonischen Schwingungen treten. Höhepunkte sind der Satz von Peter-Weyl, die Bargmann-Klassifikation und der Plancherelsatz für die Gruppe SL(2,R).
Dies ist der Beginn einer Sequenz, die in einer Masterarbeit münden kann.

Kenntnis der Maß- und Integrationstheorie ist unabdingbar, Vorkenntnisse in Funktionalanalysis und Differentialgeometrie sind nützlich.
