Disney movies- we have all watched them and we have all heard about them. But how do these movies represent diversity? In this student-led study group, we will discuss the concept of diversity and its representation in Disney movies. With the help of representation, gender, and cultural theories, we will explore how these representations work and how they are realized in Disney film productions. In groups, students will discuss a Disney movie of their choice and present their take on its representation of diversity. All the participants, also those not presenting in a given session, should actively engage in discussions.
As this is a student-led study group and not a seminar, all the participants can and should help to shape the program we will follow, and everyone will be expected to contribute by leading group discussions, doing research, and suggesting material. The specific topics will be discussed and decided on together in the group during the first sessions.
