Bei transnationaler Geschichte handelt es sich um einen Zugang, der über das Nationale hinausweist und am Globalen und der Globalisierung in ihrer historischen Dimension interessiert ist. Sie nutzt ein vielfältiges methodisches Instrumentarium, vor allem den historischen Vergleich und die Transferanalyse, und legt hohen Wert auf Interdisziplinarität. Seit Beginn der neunziger Jahre gewann die transnationale Perspektive erhebliche Popularität. Das Theorieseminar diskutiert Möglichkeiten, Perspektiven und Grenzen dieser Form von Geschichtsschreibung an Hand von Beispielen aus dem Themenfeld "Russlands Vernetzung in Europa im langen 19. Jahrhundert".
