Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, einen Überblick über die Geschichte des Hoch- und Spätmittelalters zu geben. Knapp vorgestellt werden sowohl das Königtum und die ‚einschlägigen‘ Dynastien wie auch Veränderungen auf sozialem und ökonomischem Gebiet (Aufkommen der Städte, neue religiöse Bewegungen, beginnender Fernhandel etc.). Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf grundlegende Prozesse der Veränderung gelegt, die häufig als auf die Moderne vorausweisend interpretiert werden (etwa Investiturstreit als [vermeintlicher?] Beginn der Säkularisierung; Kreuzzüge und Fernhandel als [vermeintlicher?] Beginn der europäischen Expansion etc.). Generelles Ziel ist es, das sehr andere ‚Koordinatensystem‘, an dem sich die vormoderne Gesellschaft ausrichtete, sichtbar zu machen.
Die Veranstaltung lehnt sich an den Grundkurs ‚Sozialer Wandel‘ an. Der Besuch des GK ist aber nicht vorausgesetzt für eine Teilnahme an dieser Überblicksveranstaltung.
