In the second half of the 20th century, South Africa underwent a metamorphosis. A former a police state which had systematically denied the great majority of its citizens their basic human rights became a democracy with one of the most progressive constitutions in the world; a transition achieved without the widespread civil war many had anticipated. Today, South Africans are justifiably proud of their achievements in the past 19 years of democratic rule. But there are also severe problems: poverty, unemployment, crime, AIDS, xenophobia, instances of police brutality and widespread violence against women and children, amongst many others. Yet the grandiose scenery, exotic animals, warm hospitality, vibrant cultural life and scientific excellence extolled by the tourist branch are no less part of South African reality.
This seminar offers a starting-point for considering the complexity and the contradictions of South Africa. Using a variety of sources - including some recent South African films - participants will work towards constructing an understanding of South Africa for themselves. As this is a PM 3 seminar, special attention will be paid to the role of Britain and the British in the country's history as well as the English language in South Africa today.
For active participation and "Studienleistungen" you will be expected to do some reading in preparation for the sessions and and to monitor the South African media online for the duration of the block seminar.
Those who would like to do an "Einzelleistung" or "Modulabschluss" should discuss topics for written papers with me individually, please. "Praxisstudien" projects are also possible, but, again, will have to planned on an individual basis.

For active participation and "Studienleistungen" you will be expected to do some reading in preparation for the sessions every evening and and to monitor the South African media online for the duration of the block seminar.
I will offer a choice of topics for written papers of 3,600 words for an "Einzelleistung" (old BA) or "Studienleistung" (new BA). Students in the new BA (2011 on) can also do a written paper as a "Modulprüfungen", though the topic should be discussed with me in each case; a connection to other parts of the module should be discernible as well. For students who are not planning to become teachers and/or who do not have to do practical placements in schools, "Praxisstudien" projects are also possible, but will have to be discussed with me and planned on an individual basis.
NB: New BA (2011)
Deadlines for module exams in BM 2 and BM 3
Students in the new BA (2011) should note that before they can attempt the module exams in the Profilphase or the Vertiefungsphase, they must have completed and passed the module exams in BM 2 and BM 3. This means that you cannot write your profile-module paper in PM 2 or PM 3, or attempt the oral exam in PM 4, before you have passed the module paper in BM 2 and the module exam in BM 3. (N. B. This regulation does not affect the Proficiency Test, the module exam in BM 1: you can take this whenever you feel ready for it.)
In order to help you assess and improve your academic writing skills, you will be asked to show your BM 2 module paper to the person who will read your profile-module paper. (A similar regulation obtains for the Bachelor thesis, see its module description.)
