230401 Teaching drama - From drama activities to teaching plays (tandem course with 'Reading drama', taught by Jessica Koch) (S) (SoSe 2023)

Short comment

This seminar is taught in collaboration with the course 'Reading drama' taught by Jessica Koch. We strongly advise taking both seminars in conjunction for the full experience.

In the course ‘teaching drama’ we will look at how to teach dramatic texts (Dramendidaktik) and how to use drama activities for different aspects of language teaching (Dramapädagogik). The first part of the course which – please note – takes place in blocked dates just before the start of term, we will experience how to teach plays as both texts and performances at the example of the opera play ‘At your doorstep’ (https://theater-bielefeld.de/veranstaltung/at-your-doorstep-vor-deiner-tuer.html). We will visit the Bielefeld theatre for a guided tour and a workshop and one week later watch a performance of the play with an ensuing audience discussion together with a South African audience simultaneously watching the same play in Johannesburg. The play is discussed in more depth in Jessica Koch’s course ‘Reading drama’ which we therefore strongly recommend to take at the same time. The second part of the course will take place weekly during the first nine weeks of term. During these sessions we will reflect on the theory and try out in the course how drama activities can support teaching (nonverbal) communication skills, grammar and lexis as well as teaching media, literature and culture.
