Die Kultur unserer Gegenwart ist geprägt von einem Sensibilisierungsschub: Das zeigt sich an den Bemühungen um eine gendersensible Sprache oder der Emergenz neuer literarischer Berufsfelder wie dem ‚sensitivity reading‘. Kulturgeschichtlich gesehen sind soziale und ästhetische Konjunkturen der Sensibilität nichts Neues: Eine literaturhistorische Epoche, die das menschliche Empfinden für die Moderne neu erschlossen hat, ist die sogenannte ‚Empfindsamkeit‘ im 18. Jahrhundert. Das Seminar bietet eine Einführung in Texte, Formen und Medien der Empfindsamkeit und lädt ein zur Reflexion und historischen Perspektivierung des Wertes und der Grenzen kultureller und sozialer Sensibilisierung.
Gelesen und diskutiert werden literarische und theoretische Texte verschiedener Gattungen aus dem Kontext der deutschsprachigen Empfindsamkeit (Christian Fürchtegott Gellert, Moses Mendelssohn, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Sophie von La Roche, Johann Wolfgang Goethe und Johann Heinrich Campe).
