Das Seminar befasst sich mit dem bedeutenden Sturm und Drang-Autor Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751-1792) als literarischer Figur. Seit Georg Büchners berühmter Novelle "Lenz" findet sich eine vielfältige literarische Auseinandersetzung mit der Figur des unglücklichen Sturm und Drang-Dichters (Ariane Martin hat dies als „erzählten Sturm und Drang“ bezeichnet) : Peter Schneiders Erzählung "Lenz" (1973), Gert Hofmanns Novelle "Die Rückkehr des verlorenen J. M. R. Lenz nach Riga" (1984), Marc Buhls Germanisten-Krimi "Der rote Domino" (2002) und Eduard Habsburgs "Lena in Waldersbach" (2012) liefern unterschiedliche literarische Verarbeitung des Lebens von Lenz. Meist handelt es sich um (oft an Büchner orientierten) aktualisierten Variationen eines Ensembles von Aspekten: Psychische und gesellschaftliche Krise, Jugend und Revolte, Angst und Einsamkeit (oder auch - wie bei Marc Buhl - um das schwierige Verhältnis Lenz‘ zu Goethe) usw. Die erwähnten Texte werden im Seminar darauf hin untersucht, wie Literaturgeschichte in diesen Texten erzählt wird, welches gegenwartsdiagnostisches Potenzial die Texte entfalten wollen und warum dieses in Lenz‘ Leben bzw. in der Sturm- und Drang-Periode gespiegelt wird.
