The main objective of this course is to give the students a broad overview of the field of linguistics. We will cover such areas as historical linguistics, i.e. Old and Middle English including such aspects as language change, but also such topics as sociolinguistics, pragmatics, syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics and phonology. Above and beyond that, we'll look at varieties of English (how do British and American English differ from each other). Reading material will be announced at the beginning of the course.

In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
