Focusing aspects of migration, mobility and identity, we will read and discuss a series of texts from the black (diaspora) experience in the Americas. Drawing upon an inter-American comparative approach we will trace routes between the Caribbean and the U.S., the Caribbean and Canada, Canada and the U.S. Our focus will be on novels and life-writing texts by authors such Ralph Ellison, Edwidge Danticat, Dionne Brand, Jamaica Kincaid among others. In addition, our close reading of texts will be combined with critical reflections on contemporary literary theory. Active participation includes an oral presentation and a short paper.
