231143 Cultural Memory and Documentary Film: Black Music in the Americas (S) (WiSe 2013/2014)

Both music and documentary film play a crucial role in expressing, narrating and historicizing ‘race’, ‘nation’ and ‘identity’. Looking at the crossroads of documentary film and music, we analyze how these media contribute to the narration of the nation as well as to the narration of transnational entanglement. In particular we will address questions of documentation and fiction, oral and visual culture in relation to print culture, and how music and camera interact in telling “new” stories. We will closely analyze recent and contemporary films such as Bob Marley, HavanYork, Buena Vista Social Club, Inventos, Warming at the Devil’s Fire among others.
