This seminar is an introduction to the history of the English language. We will cover all the major periods in the history of English: Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Present Day English. In addition to that we will look at issues such as language change and language contact, but we will also consider the socio-cultural background of the historical developments. This class will be based on a textbook (Gramley 2012), and the topics dealt with will largely follow that text.
