Life behind bars exceeds most people's imagination. This gap can be filled with accounts from inside, by the inmates themselves and their narratives. According to the PEN American Center with their extensive prison writing program, writing while serving a sentence has "restorative, rehabilitative power. [...] It provides a place for inmates to express themselves freely and encourages the use of the written word as a legitimate form of power." (http://www.pen.org/prison-writing).
In the workshop atmosphere of this Blockseminar, we will survey famous prison writings such as Oscar Wilde's, Malcolm X's and Leonard Peltier's, complement them with texts published online and ponder possible causes and effects of prison writing.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
