We will start by defining some of the concepts central to the workings of parody and satire, including intertextuality, burlesque, caricature, travesty, wit, humour, and laughter. Looking at visual and verbal examples from eighteenth-century cartoons and pamphlets to twenty-first century tv comedy, we will further explore reasons why parody and satire have been thriving in Britain in a way unparalleled on the continent. Our emphasis throughout is interdisciplinary and will enable participants to develop their analytical skills in the areas of aesthetics and cultural history, as well as strategies for discussing the operations of genre and narrative in the context of parody and satire.
