Teil der historischen Entwicklung des bundesdeutschen Schulwesens ist die Gründung und Institutionalisierung des Gesamtschulwesens in den 70er Jahren gewesen. Die Gesamtschulen sind keine einheitlichen "Gebilde". Sie unterschieden sich von den anderen weiterführenden Schulen (Haupt-, Realschule und Gymnasien) vielfältig in den Bereichen der Integration und Selektion, des Ganztagsangebotes, der Fächerinhalte.
Die Ergebnisse der PISA-Studie haben die Diskussion über die Schulformen in der Bundesrepublik neu entfacht. Eine der Kernfragen ist dabei immer wieder, ob das bundesdeutsche Schulwesen nicht zu früh die Jugendlichen selektiert und ob nicht integrativere Schulformen die "Schulen der Zukunft" darstellen.
