Joseph Roth (1894-1939) gehört zu den großen Erzählern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Romane lassen sich als Chronik des Untergangs der osteuropäisch-jüdischen Kultur und des Österreichischen Kaiserreichs sowie als kritische Diagnose der westlichen Moderne betrachten.
Am Beispiel ausgewählter Texte Roths führt das Seminar in Erzähl- und Romantheorien des 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Außerdem werden zentrale Motive und Themen der Rothschen Erzählpraxis erörtert: Flucht, Wanderung und Krieg; die politische und kulturelle Funktion von Mythos und Legende sowie Roths poetische Soziologie sozialer Räume: Großstadt, Hotel, Bahnhof und Friedhof.
Folgende Romane Joseph Roths werden im Seminar behandelt: Rechts und Links; Bericht eines Mörders, erzählt in einer Nacht; Hiob; Radetzkymarsch, Hotel Savoy.
