Die Französische Revolution ist das beherrschende politische Ereignis ihrer Epoche. Die Revolutionskriege prägen Europa über ein Vierteljahrhundert, die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen der Revolution wirken bis heute nach.
Im Seminar werden wir uns mit der Aufnahme der Revolution in der zeitgenössischen deutschen Literatur beschäftigen. Als wie bedeutsam wurde die Revolution von ihren Zeitgenossen eingestuft? Welche Haltungen - Euphorie, Ablehnung, reflektierte Distanz - nahmen sie ihr gegenüber ein? Welchen Einfluss hat die Revolution auf die 'Blütezeit' der deutschen Literatur um 1800?
Indem das Seminar auf den relativ kurzen Zeitraum von zehn Jahren beschränkt ist, bietet es einen Querschnitt durch die unterschiedlichen literarischen Bezugnahmen auf die Zeitereignisse.
Vielfältig sind dabei auch die Formen, in denen dies geschieht: Lyrik (Klopstock, Hölderlin), Romane (Knigge), Essays (Wieland, Goethe), aber auch Briefe und journalistische Berichte (Campe, Forster).
