Schriftliche Texte sind allgegenwärtig in der alltäglichen wie institutionellen Kommunikation. In und durch Texte können unterschiedliche Formen kommunikativer Arbeit verrichtet werden, außerdem besitzen schriftlich vermittelte Kommunikationen die Eigenart, dass sie die Situationsbezogenheit der Kommunikation reduzieren und je nach Vervielfältigungsgrad an beliebigen Orten und zu beliebigen Zeiten produzentenunabhängig rezipierbar sind. Ferner ist das Entstehen schriftlicher Texte zum Teil nur in ihrer technischen Bedingtheit (computervermittelte Kommunikation) oder in der Interaktion mit Bildern zu verstehen. Angesichts dessen, überrasche dem Ethnomethodologen Rod Watson (1997) zufolge, die vergleichsweise geringe sozialwissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit Texten. Das Seminar führt in unterschiedlich methodische Verfahren der Analyse textueller Daten ein, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf der Diskursanalyse und der ethnomethodologischen Textanalyse liegt.
