Über Kleists "Kohlhaas" schrieb Franz Kafka: "ein Staunen faßt mich über das andere". Aber auch die anderen Erzählungen Kleists sind erstaunlich und in ihrer Zeit singulär. Im Seminar sollen die Erzählungen und poetologische Texte Kleists analysiert werden, um die ästhetische und historische Besonderheit seiner Verfahrensweise zu erfassen.
