Die Veranstaltung führt ein in die Vielfalt der Sprachen der Welt, in die Gründe für ihre Ausdifferenzierung, ihre geographische Verbreitung, ihre genetische Verwandtschaft und ihre typologischen Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede. Dabei werden wesentliche Grundbegriffe zur internen und externen Beschreibung von Sprachen erarbeitet und die wichtigsten Ansätze zur Klassifizierung von Sprachtypen vorgestellt. Beispiele aus vielen Sprachen der Welt begleiten die Seminararbeit.
Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, einerseits einen Gesamteindruck von der sprachlichen Situation der Welt zu vermitteln, andererseits aber die frappanten Unterschiede, die auch zwischen den großen Kultursprachen bestehen, hervorzuheben. Am Schluß der Veranstaltung sind die Teilnehmer über die sprachliche Situation der Welt grob orientiert und sind mit den wesentlichen Elementen einer sprachwissenschaftlich fundierten und typologisch konsistenten Beschreibung von Sprachen vertraut.
