Der Kurs befasst sich mit transnationalem Aktivismus und dem Einfluss der internationalen Zivilgesellschaft auf militärische Konflikte. Der erste Teil des Kurses widmet sich dem Konzept und den Akteure der internationalen Zivilgesellschaft und diskutiert verschiedene Theorien über Formen und Wirkungsweisen transnationalen Aktivismus. Dabei geht es darum, herauszuarbeiten, wie internationale Netzwerke von nicht-staatlichen Akteuren den Modus internationaler und transnationaler Politik beeinflussen können. In einem zweiten Teil werden die erarbeiteten Theorien angewandt, um empirische Bespiele von internationalen Aktivistennetzwerken und deren Einfluss auf kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen und sicherheitspolitische Fragen zu analysieren. Thematisiert werden dabei pazifistische und humanitäre Bewegungen, transnationale Kampagnen für nukleare Abrüstung, ziviler Widerstand in kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen sowie transnationale Unterstützung für bewaffnete Gruppen.
