230527 From Black Power to Black Lives Matter: Reconsidering African American Movements and Cultures from the 1960s to the present (S) (WiSe 2022/2023)

The Black Live Matter protests that sent shockwaves well beyond the boundaries of the United States after the assassination of George Floyd in 2020 sparked a new interest in previous episodes of the African American freedom struggle. In this seminar, students will explore the manifold dimensions of the Civil Rights/Black Power era of the 1960s and 1970s in order to get a better understanding of the current manifestations of black protest in popular culture and social movements. We will explore expressions of black resistance in the legacies of movement icons such as Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, and Muhammad Ali, black music genres from soul and funk to hip-hop, fashion, arts, sports, film, literature, and ideologies such as pan-Africanism, black nationalism, and black feminism.
