230493 Cityscapes: Representation of the Urban in Literature, Film, Arts (BS) (WiSe 2022/2023)

Contents, comment

The city has become the setting for and expression of modern culture with all its temptations, myth-making processes, social conflicts, and manifestations of economic crisis. Departing from theories of space and the urban, we explore the representation of the city in North American culture in literature, film, video, and photography. The course is divided into a theoretical section addressing aspects of space, public space, public sphere, city and metropolis and a section in which students apply urban and spatial theory to the analysis of selected literary texts, film excerpts, videos, and photographs. In addition to our class meetings students can expect an additional project task to be submitted at the end of the semester.
