Biographie kann als ein Ort der Vermittlung von Individuum und Gesellschaft, von Allgemeinen und Besonderem begriffen werden. Biographien rekonstruieren Bildungsprozesse als Entwicklung einer besonderen Identität bzw. Fallstruktur in Auseinandersetzung mit dem gesellschaftlich Gegebenen und dem Fall „Aufgegebenen“. In einem ersten Teil des Seminars wird „Biographie“ als ein soziologisches Konzept erarbeitet und die methodologische Diskussion um die Biographieforschung diskutiert.

Ein zweiter Teil widmet sich dem narrativen Interview, das häufig mit dem lebensgeschichtlichen Interview gleichgesetzt wird, obwohl es von Schütze und Kallmeyer in einem anderen Kontext entwickelt wurde. Nach der Vorstellung exemplarischer Studien soll die Auswertung biographisch-narrativer Interviews (angelehnt an Rosenthal und Oevermann) vorgestellt und anhand von Datenmaterial praktisch eingeübt werden.
