Medium aevum - das mittlere Zeitalter. So beschrieben im 14. Jahrhundert erstmals italienische Humanisten eine Zeit zwischen der Antike, die ihnen als Vorbild galt, und einer neuen Zeit, die sie angebrochen sahen. Obschon daraus später ein Epochenbegriff wurde, sind mit dem Begriff 'Mittelalter' unterschiedliche Vorstellungen verbunden. Dies zeigt sich schon in der Diskussion um die Epochengrenzen, aber auch in den unterschiedlichen Ausdeutungen des Mittelalters. Mit den Epochenimaginationen und Meistererzählungen sollen im Seminar ausgewählte Traditionen und Perspektiven mediävistischer Historiographie in den Blick genommen werden.
