Vor 50 Jahren erschien Jürgen Habermas Studie über den 'Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit'. Der Untertitel weist mit 'Untersuchungen zu einer Kategorie der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft' auf eine moderne Öffentlichkeit, die sich deutlich von einer vormodernen Öffentlichkeit unterscheiden lasse. Demnach hat die Öffentlichkeit eine Geschichte. Aber welche Geschichte von Öffentlichkeit in der Vormoderne lässt sich erzählen? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage werden im Seminar ausgewählte theoretische Konzeptionen von Öffentlichkeit in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften diskutiert und mit Phänomenen vormoderner Öffentlichkeiten in Verbindung gebracht.
