Departing from theoretical texts on the notion of national identity and on the ideological potential of music, the course explores processes of construction and consolidation of national identity through music.
Broader topics covered include: German national identity in the 20th century, Croatian and Serbian national identity during the Civil War, the Estonian Singing Revolution and post-Soviet national identity/ies in contemporary Russia.
The seminar will enable students to familiarize with the main scholarly approaches within the field as well as with the methodological challenges faced by researchers of this topic.
