300128 Theories of Transnationalization and Development (S) (WiSe 2005/2006)

Contents, comment

Sustained and continuous border-crossing ties, concatenating in transnational viz. transstate networks, groups, institutions and communities, call into question cherished paradigms of development which presuppose a container model of societal and state organization. We thus deal with a fundamental incongruence in the contemporary world between the ?world of societies? on the one hand and the ?world of states? on the other hand. While the first part of the course introduces into the study of transnational relations, which focuses on the interactions of powerful public and private actors, the second part surveys the growing literature on transnational communities, diasporas, transnational social movements, non-governmental organizations and transnational spaces. The third part turns to selected examples dealing with issues such as transnational elites in international organizations and multinational companies, scientists in epistemic communities, and migrant communities and development.
