In der Veranstaltung soll die Entstehung des modernen Staates als Geschichte seiner Ausdifferenzierung (aus religiösen und ständischen Bindungen) erarbeitet werden. Von Interesse sind dabei die allen funktionalen Ausdifferenzierungsprozessen gemeinsamen Merkmale der Rollentrennung und Generalisierung (z.B. politischer Ämter) und grundsätzlich der Umstellung von Rollen- auf Systemdifferenzierung. Insofern ergeben sich zwei Schwerpunkte, einerseits die soziologische Theorie der Funktionsdifferenzierung (Luhmann) und andererseits deren historisch-evolutionäre Geschichtlichkeit am Beispiel des modernen Staates. Übergeordnetes Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, Verständnis für die historisch-evolutionären "Grundlagen" soziologischer Theoriebildung zu fördern.
