The course basically responds to the why, what and how of teaching reading, speaking, writing, listening, grammar and vocabulary in secondary schools. Students will be asked to plan and demonstrate specific lessons (micro-teachings) based on the material in the schoolbooks or material they create on their own. Among the items we will focus on receptive and productive skills. Further, we will consider grammar teaching, vocabulary teaching and fluency practice. We will cover different levels of proficiency from the fifth class to the higher grades (up to Oberstufe). In particular we will be exploring ways of introducing material.
• relating material to the interests and experience of the learners
• modifying and/or supplementing the course-book material
• exploiting both inductive and deductive approaches to learning
• encouraging the development of learner autonomy
• creating opportunities for individualised learning
• linking the schoolbook material to authentic material
Assessment and grading will be announced in the first session of the seminar.
