Caribbean music owes its diversity to a various range of instrumental, ethnic and linguistic influences, be it of African, European or native origin. From Salsa to Soca, from Reggae to Dancehall, and from Mambo to Cuban Rap, this course aims at covering globally speaking the most influential types of music coming from the Caribbean throughout the last century. We will look at several music genres which make and have made a statement, which have and have had socio-political implications, either in the form of an ethnic revival or disseminative of a certain political ideology. Students can obtain up to three credit points for oral presentation and essay writing.
