Departing from theoretical texts from the field of border studies, spatial studies as well as transnational American studies, we will explore the representation of the borders between Canada and the US as well as Mexico and the US in recent and contemporary cinema, e.g. films such as Frozen River, Miss Balla, Highway 61, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and Babel among others. We will do close film analysis and in-class writing workshops to explore the cultural, political, and aesthetic representations of borders in film.
