This course is based on reading original social science texts in English including case studies
and research articles. Even though, the main emphasis of the course is on reading English, speaking
and writing English are also practiced. The student is introduced to a number of reading strategies
designed to enable him or her to better understand required or recommended reading in their other
courses at the university that are in English. A main goal of the course is to expand the students’
academic vocabulary in English through reading and speaking. In addition, some typical lexical
and grammatical problems in reading English are dealt with in the course.
Regular attendance is required for passing this course, as students’ participation in in-class
discussions of the assigned texts counts for one third of the work towards passing the course. The
fulfilment of the remainder of the requirements for the course includes the passing of one test and
the student’s successful participation in a group project focusing on the improvement of their
reading and speaking of English for the social sciences. The course is conducted on a Pass/Fail
basis and and three credit points are awarded as a result of passing the course.
