In der Übung wird ein Überblick über Phänomene der politischen Kommunikation erarbeitet. Dazu gehört das Zusammenspiel zwischen Politik und Medien, das – oft kritisch – unter dem Titel „symbolische Politik“ diskutiert wird, allgemeiner formuliert jedoch die Orientierung der Politik an der „öffentlichen Meinung“ betrifft. Unter politischer Kommunikation soll aber auch das Politische insgesamt verstanden werden: nämlich als ein Kommunikationssystem, das sich selbst von seiner gesellschaftlichen Umwelt abgrenzt. In der Übung geht es einerseits darum, die Merkmale und Spielarten politischer Kommunikation herauszuarbeiten. Zum anderen soll die gegenseitige Abhängigkeit – oder auch „strukturelle Kopplung“ – zwischen Politik und Medien mit Bezug auf unterschiedliche politische Phänomene analysiert werden.
