Die klassische Sozialgeschichte – speziell in der Variante der „Bielefelder Schule“ – war nie unumstritten. Seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre formierte sich eine Gegenbewegung, die in erster Linie auf ethnologischen/anthropologischen und alltagsgeschichtlichen Impulsen beruhte. Im mikrohistorischen Ansatz fand sie einen gemeinsamen Bezugspunkt. In dem Seminar geht es zum einen darum, diesen Methodenstreit, der die Diskussion nicht nur in Deutschland lange prägte, auf theoretisch-konzeptioneller Ebene in seinen Grundpositionen nachzuvollziehen. Zum anderen wird anhand exemplarischer Studien ausgelotet, wie die Postulate der „Mikrogeschichte“ empirisch eingelöst wurden. Am Ende steht die Frage, welchen Beitrag ein mikrohistorischer Zugriff zur Analyse historischer Strukturen und Prozesse zu leisten vermag.
