American Drama functions as a mirror of psychological, bodily, economic, and social realities in US-American society throughout the 20th century. At the same time American drama reflects an American society caught between dreams and nightmares. Comparing text and performance (mainly film versions of the selected plays) we will trace the dynamics of hope and failure, utopia and dystopia, idealism and disillusionment from Eugene O’Neill’s Emperor Jones through Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman to Tony Kushner’s Angels in America. Praxisstudien are possible.
