Interviews are generally considered as more of an interpretivist method, however a variety of types are applied in social sciences. The seminar offers an overview of these different approaches (structured/, unstructured/, semi-structured interview, narrative interview, ethnographic interview, expert interview, and focus groups) that makes the interview a very flexible research method. From an epistemological point of view the course will introduce the student to recent debates on the nature of research interviews, its methodological strengths and weaknesses regarding the kind of data that is produced through interview techniques by the researchers as opposed to non-reactive/natural data.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
